THE DISEASE
Obesity is not a problem of willpower. Research shows that the causes of obesity are much more complex and include such things as genetic makeup, learned behavior, living environment, medical issues, and emotional health/ wellbeing. Today, obesity is recognized as a chronic, debilitating disorder that requires serious attention. About 58 million adults in the United States are overweight. More than 14 million are seriously over-weight. Approximately five million are morbidly obese. An individual is morbidly obese if he or she is 100 pounds or more overweight, or has a body mass index of 40 or more. The term "morbid" means unhealthy or diseased, thus, a morbidly obese person faces extreme health risks that can have a negative impact on lifestyle, activity, physical and emotional wellbeing. Morbid obesity can cause serious health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, and degenerative joint disease, and has been proven to dramatically increase the possibility of death.
