SINUSITIS

It is estimated that more than 35 million people develop sinus-related problems each year. Located in the face, the sinuses are chambers under, between and above the eyes which contain air. These air contaminants, such as allergens, viruses or bacteria, can cause inflammation in the lining of the sinuses, blocking the openings and often creating infection. This condition, known as sinusitis, can cause a number of symptoms such as breathing difficulties, nasal discharge, dry mouth, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, pain around the eyes, and snoring. Patients with chronic sinusitis can also develop chronic fatigue, depression, or pain syndromes. Individuals with immunodeficiency, sardoid, auto immune illnesses, cystic fibrosis, immotile cilia syndrome, aspirin sensitivity, and asthma have a predisposition to sinus infections. Structural abnormalities within the nasal cavity and the sinuses can also predispose individuals to more frequent infections. In addition, benign polyps sometimes develop in the sinuses from chronic irritation and can contribute to recurring sinus infections. Much less commonly, tumors can cause a secondary sinus infection by preventing sinus drainage.
